Who is master roshi in dbz

Before using his cane to defeat one of the soldiers. When Krillin is scared while being threatened by the army, Master Roshi, while wrestling with a soldier, encouraged him by telling him that "he saw a lot of fights by many amazing warriors and that he will not be hit by such weaklings" and that "he should be proud because, he was trained by the great Master Roshi".

After Krillin regained confidence, he then used "an original move of Master Roshi", the Kamehameha, against his opponents before powering down. He later watches the fight between Goku and Frieza and later Vegeta who steps in after Goku is taken out. After Frieza destroys the Earth, Roshi gets protected by Whis, along with the others. Whis undoes time for Goku to able to kill Frieza and send him back to Earth's Hell. He is later seen at a party, with the other Z fighters who participated in the fight, talking to Tien and Vegeta.

However, Roshi later calls Bulma to tell her that Goku forgot to take the seal to the future timeline, preventing them from sealing Zamasu.

Main article: Universe Survival Saga. Knowing it is a tournament that isn't purely about power but team work and strategy as well, Gohan recommends Master Roshi as a member of Team Universe 7 , saying his massive experience and enormous bag of tricky attacks will be extremely useful. Goku agrees saying Master Roshi can easily hold his own with his special moves alone.

Roshi shows up to Yamcha's home as the latter is watching TV. Yamcha thinks Roshi is inviting him to join the team, but Roshi is only here to get Puar to transform into a young woman. Roshi claims that he is doing this because he wants to overcome his perversion before the tournament starts, but Yamcha isn't so sure it will work.

Oolong already refused to help Roshi so the latter turns to Puar. After a short while, Master Roshi finally overcame his weakness and heads to Korin's tower for some training. He soon meet up with the others at Capsule Corp.

While at the Tournament of Power , Krillin asked him would he be okay when seeing the two females Caulifla and Kale , the turtle hermit assured him and Tien Shinhan that he will be fine.

Later after Krillin damages Zium's wing with his Destructo Disc, Roshi blasts Zium out of the arena with his version of the Kamehameha. He regroups with the other members of Team Universe 7. After completely scoping out everything since the tournament begin, Master Roshi ventures off on his own, while analyzing the status of the remaining fighters; he is soon confronted by three of the Universe 4 fighters; the first was Caway whom was trying to seduce him , but her efforts backfired as he chased her off the stage; the second was Dercori whom used her talismans to trap him in an illusion , Master Roshi successfully sealed her inside a jar with the Evil Containment Wave and tossed it off-stage with both Omni-Kings allowing the jar, saying it was neat ; the third and final opponent was Ganos, who transformed in order to fight Roshi.

Initially Master Roshi was overwhelming him, but was overpowered when the latter increased in power. Left with no other option, Master Roshi uses up all of his energy to knock Ganos out of the arena with a Life Force MAX Power Kamehameha while at the same time, reminiscing the things he had learned from Goku and Krillin, as well as their time spent together.

He almost died until Goku revived him with some of his energy, afterwards the two head off together. Master Roshi sits down on a rock, Goku asks him if he will be fine. Roshi tells him that he will be fine with some rest. Roshi then tells Goku to go on and fight for him. Goku then departs. Roshi is next seen resting and hiding in a rock circle recovering and laminating how recovering was easier when he was younger.

He is then attacked by Frost and is battered around thanks to being tired and their power gap. Roshi calls out Frost on going after weakened and tired fighters and Frost begins to torture his newly injured left shoulder.

Frost mentions its not fun if they can't fight back and goes to eliminate Roshi but Roshi unleashes his Full Power and manages to push Frost back for a few moments but is overpowered.

Frost says that it's hard for him to fight here as he has to be careful not to kill him by accident and blasts him with several Chaos Shots.

Roshi, having been blasted back to his base form, uses the Evil Containment Wave again and almost manages to seal Frost; still, his injured shoulder prevents him from aiming properly. Frost, horrified at Roshi for having such a useful attack, forgets the rules and tries to kill Roshi, but Vegeta steps in and saves him, mentioning that he isn't saving him, it's just Frost pisses him off.

Roshi sits back and lets Vegeta handle Frost and the now present Augo Magetta. When Frost mentions that he can't beat him in a normal convention, Roshi goes for the Evil Containment Wave again, trying to seal both Frost and Magetta; however, Frost uses a reflection to gain control. Vegeta rushes in to save Roshi once again, but Beerus sees through the trap and tells Vegeta to move, but it is too late and Vegeta is hit by and sealed away.

Roshi, refusing to let Vegeta get eliminated thanks to him, charges and is easily blown back by Frost and shot with more Chaos Shots.

In a last ditch effort, Roshi fires a very small ki blast at the jar and seems to miss. Frost mocks Roshi's attempt, but Roshi shows he actually can use the attack like the Spirit Ball and redirects it back to blast the jar open, freeing an enraged Vegeta, who comes out as a Super Saiyan Blue and blasts the custom rock made hearing protectors off of Magetta and calls him a bastard, which makes him curl up into a ball.

Frost retreats as Vegeta casually rolls Magetta off the stage. Roshi apologizes to Vegeta, to which he doesn't answer and instead asks Roshi to retire and eliminate himself before he dies from exhaustion. Roshi, realizing that Vegeta is right, agrees with him reluctantly. Vegeta then promises Roshi that he will take care of everything else as he has done enough.

Roshi, leaving the rest of the fight to Vegeta, allows himself to pass out and fall out of the ring. Tien and Krillin catch Roshi and give him a Senzu Bean, reviving him. Beerus, while initially appearing to be angry, reveals that he is only joking and says the three did very well given the situation and, in a rare show of respect from the God of Destruction, Beerus calls Roshi "Master".

When the Galactic Bandit Brigade arrive and promptly split up, Master Roshi suggests splitting up to deal with them and heads off with Krillin to soon come across Yunba. While Krillin is trying to warn Roshi about Yunba's deceptive speed, Roshi spots three young attractive female convicts who head off elsewhere. Rather than stay and fight with Krillin, Roshi excitedly leaves him to give chase to the trio instead.

Roshi is initially overpowered by the three and when Krillin joins his side, he tells him that the girls he chased after are more than he bargained for, as they will not let him grope them, before correcting himself and saying that his attacks won't hit.

Miza , Iwaza and Kikaza , appear and vow to give him payback. Krillin notes that they have powerful energy, but if Roshi were to use the same power that he showed against Jiren in the Tournament of Power, then he should not have any trouble. However, Roshi says that he is unable to perform that without a clear mind and that, right now, his mind must be possessed by wicked energy, to which Krillin comically deduces as to why that is.

Roshi covers his eyes, which allows him to successfully dodge and evade all three convicts' attacks. Roshi suggests that the girls give up their evil ways and return to the Galactic Prison.

Angered, the three girls fuse together to become one significantly large, unattractive female and lands a single blow on Krillin and Roshi that sends them both flying. They try to hide from the fused female convict but Krillin, despite knowing that he doesn't stand a chance, decides that he'd rather go out swinging. As the overweight convict prepares to kill both Krillin and Roshi, she is suddenly knocked out with a single punch by Goku, who had teleported to Earth after sensing Krillin's energy spiking.

Main article: Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge Master Roshi appears lounging on his chair outside Kame House, proceeding to tell Goku off for trying to practice the Kamehameha and getting his magazines wet, with Goku protesting that he hasn't even finished training yet.

He then notes that Goku's gotten stronger since he returned from Planet Namek in the dub equivalent of this scene, Roshi was instead impressed at Goku's Kamehameha, with Goku saying he can split the waves even higher, and Roshi also indicating that beating Frieza changed Goku into becoming more open. Master Roshi, alongside Krillin, Oolong, and a very reluctant Future Trunks, were about to see a swimsuit runway, only to grow tired of waiting and decide to peek into the dressing rooms, with all but Future Trunks following Roshi's lead.

He then regrouped with Goku, Gohan, and Chi-Chi at a restaurant, with their admitting that they got the dates wrong. He later aided in evacuating the civilians from an ambush from Android 14 and After the battles are over, he paid a visit to the hospital where Gohan, Goku, Future Trunks, and Krillin were present due to their injuries fighting both androids as well as Android On New Namek, Roshi encounters the Cyclopian Guards and Oolong panics, though Yajirobe tells him to be calm like Master Roshi, only for him to suggest they head home and leave things to Goku and the others.

Roshi tries to punch one of the Cyclopian Guards, but comically ends up injuring his hand. They are greeted by the Guide Robo who explains their energy will be used as fuel to power the Big Gete Star, horrifying them and they become imprisoned.

Roshi and the others watch helplessly as Yajirobe is about to be chopped up when the Guide Robo overloads due Goku and Vegeta's Super Saiyan energy overloading the main core. Roshi and the others then flee the self-destructing Big Gete Star. As they make their escape they encounter Vegeta, Goku, and Meta-Cooler core.

After Cooler's defeat, Roshi and the others watch as Goku and Vegeta fall to the ground behind them. Master Roshi attends a picnic along with the other Z Fighters and their family members barring Goku and Chi-Chi, who were at a parent teacher interview session for a school Chi-Chi planned to send Gohan to. He ended up becoming severely drunk, and thus was doing various fool tricks such as balancing a stick with dishes on them with his teeth in the dub, this was altered to state that he was going berserk because someone hid all of his girlie magazines.

He was also the only one besides Bikini who actually enjoyed Krillin's painful karaoke session, mostly due to his drunkeness. After the flight over to New Planet Vegeta , he started experiencing a hangover which was also amplified later on by Oolong smashing his head with a mallet in order to give him "medicine", although the Dub implied that his hangover was due to overstuffing on Tuna Sandwiches.

He also ate a feast prepared by Paragus for Goku, along with Goku and Oolong. He eventually attempts to demand that Paragus either let him and his friends leave New Planet Vegeta, or at the very least install a video and magazine store to liven up the place while Paragus was busy trying to regain control over Broly , despite Oolong's warning that Paragus is most likely not going to let him.

Eventually, Roshi ends up dreaming about meeting a pretty girl and is rubbing his head on Oolong's feet, eventually biting on it, and slept through Broly's attack on Goku. Master Roshi later tries to help Goku and the other Saiyans fight Broly by transforming into his maximum power form and attempts to use the MAX Power Kamehameha made more explicit in the Japanese dub where he says "Kamehame While facing Broly, Roshi calls him "Broccoli", revealing Broly's name is a pun on the word "broccoli".

After Paragus' spaceship was destroyed, he realizes he left his lunch on Paragus' spaceship. He eventually makes it off the planet when Piccolo arrives and lends them the Capsule Corporation spaceship he used to get to New Planet Vegeta. However while there Roshi is more concerned with the young ladies around rather than the fighting, much to Oolong's annoyance. He climbs a flagpole to get a better view, spotting three young woman sitting nearby, after "scanning" them, he makes his approach much to their horror.

Later on he makes his way to Battle Island 2 to watch the finals though sleeps through the introductions, he awakens later though to see Krillin be defeated by Zangya. Roshi later visits the hospital to see his friends where they are tending their wounds following the battles with Bojack and his Galaxy Soldiers.

Master Roshi appears with the others at Capsule Corporation when they are trying to figure out how to open Hoi 's Music Box containing Tapion. At night, Master Roshi attends a barbecue with his friends at Capsule Corporation, but is knocked out by Bulma due to his behaviour. When Roshi finds out that there will be prizes at the party, he asks Bulma if any of them involve dirty movies.

He continues to enjoy the rest of the party until the God of Destruction Beerus arrives and begins to cause a scene. After taking down Buu, Roshi commands Piccolo, Tien Shinhan and Android 18 to take him on though their attempt is brief. He joins the others in watching Goku battle Beerus but is unable to keep up with the action due to the speed of the two warriors.

After the battles are over and the threat to Earth is no more, Roshi enjoys the rest of the celebrations. Master Roshi arrives with Krillin at the location of Frieza's Spaceship as a means of defence against his one thousand strong army while waiting for Goku and Vegeta to appear, and asks Gohan if he had kept up with his martial arts training.

After tallying up the number of soldiers, Roshi enters into his Max Power state to battle Frieza's forces. Despite his struggles, Roshi takes down many of the soldiers by himself using his trusty Kamehameha technique and alongside his friends prevails in the battle. When confronted against Frieza, Roshi asks if they could stand a chance against him if they all attacked him at once only to be told that he is in another league entirely. When Frieza transforms into his final form, Roshi comically de-powers into his normal state and does a runner.

Master Roshi is present for the remainder of events, watching as Earth is destroyed, brought back and Frieza is killed by Goku. When they find a crystal ball, he confronts them as Jackie Chun. They defeat Jackie Chun and he leaves, finding them worthy. Jackie Chun returns to his island and changes back to normal, when his students arrive he reveals that the crystal ball they collected was a gift from Baba.

Tien is the only one who is aware they had fought Roshi disguised as Jackie Chun having discovered Jackie Chun's true identity during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Main article: List of Power Levels. Master Roshi is among one of the strongest humans in history, and the strongest fighter of his generation. A legendary champion of the World Martial Arts Tournament , simply knowing that students of his were competing in the said tournament left all spectators in awe.

Despite his advanced age reducing his natural stamina and endurance while also reducing his peak performance, he makes up for it with super efficiency both physically and mentally, able to easily read his opponent's movements and battle tactics, allowing him to move with minimal needed effort. His experience and intuition have honed his natural instincts to become fully aware of his surroundings to the point practically being able to move against threats automatically.

A grandmaster of all martial arts and hand-to-hand combat styles, along with their respective techniques and skills, Roshi is an outstandingly versatile fighter and tactician, able to quickly see through an opponent's skills and effortlessly change his own methods to best suit the situation. At the same time, he is deceptively strong for his frail-form, able to move at blazing speeds and move massive structures with his bare hands, all while at base power.

During his battle with Goku at the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament he still managed to barely beat his student even after having used up almost all of his energy to destroy the moon.

In the 22nd tournament, after getting serious and bulking up somewhat he was a match for Tien Shinhan. Once he outputs his absolute maximum might, he was capable of destroying the moon and it was believed by the likes of Yamcha and Krillin that he could kill Great Ape Goku with one Kamehameha.

Roshi notes that his perverted ways had held him back all these years, and that putting the energy he once used for them towards combat had greatly increased his power and skill. In the anime, he also stated that Goku and Krillin's battles had taught him to go beyond his limit. However, over the course of the Dragon Ball series, his power became outclassed by the newer generation of fighters. Good thing he gets what he deserves every time a woman punches his face in.

Here's a fact that even the most hardcore Dragon Ball fans might not remember, Master Roshi is immortal. In fact, he's over years old at the time of his introduction into the franchise, not aging after a certain point in his life.

The dark part about this is that various villains in the series fought and worked hard to to achieve immortality, usually with the dragon balls, and failed on most accounts.

In fact, he had two different methods of eternal life that seemed to have escaped the knowledge of all these villains. Master Roshi was supposedly bestowed immortality by his pet phoenix, but it was later stated in Dragon Ball Super that he eats the Paradise Grass from the forest of terror to add 1, years to his lifespan.

Seriously, why doesn't he save some for the Z-fighters and their families? This is a bit of a silly one, but there's still some darkness to this throwaway joke. When we first meet Master Roshi, he says she enjoys getting pizza delivered to his home. This is meant to be rather tongue-in-cheek since Roshi's house is located on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean.. However, while this may be a joke to the readers, we are not told if this is an actual lie or not.

If it's true, that means that Master Roshi forces some poor delivery kid to fly all the way out to his isolated home just so he can enjoy some pizza. We can't blame him for loving pizza, but maybe he should learn to make it at home. Try frozen pizza, Roshi, it's not bad!

Before Master Roshi came along, the martial arts elements of Dragon Ball were not quite as prevalent. After he first used the Kamehameha, things would never be the same in Akira Toriyama's crazy world. Roshi not only introduced the concept of ki attacks and power levels, he's also indirectly responsible for shifting the focus of the series to battles, specifically supernatural martial arts.

Without him, Dragon Ball 's popularity might not have skyrocketed. See, Roshi's first big story arc was when he was training Goku and Krillin, which was the first time the series focused heavily on martial arts.

It also led to the first world martial arts tournament arc in the franchise, and when this arc was well-received by the manga readers, Toriyama's editor said he should lean more heavily into battles and martial arts. It's kind of dark to think that this one character changed the entire franchise, and that without him, Dragon Ball 's popularity might not have skyrocketed.

Before Goku knew of his origins as a Saiyan, all he knew of his early life was that his grandpa found him in the woods.

Grandpa Gohan once trained under Master Roshi and at some point he told Roshi of the boy he found in the woods, and how he was raising him as his own. So Roshi new about how Grandpa Gohan found Goku, what's so dark about that?

Well, in certain versions of this flashback, Grandpa Gohan stumbled across Goku in the crater that his spaceship made when it landed on Earth. And Yet, he saw fit to keep such a secret to himself, only revealing it when it was too late during the Saiyan saga.

No one can ever claim that Master Roshi wasn't a thorough teacher, since he went to great lengths to make sure his students truly walked the path of the martial artist. See, if Goku and Krillin won the very first martial arts tournament they competed in, Master Roshi figured they'd lose interest in fighting, since they did so well on their first go.

Thus, he came up with a plan. Roshi disguised himself as "Jackie Chun" an obvious tribute to Jackie Chain by Toriyama and entered the tournament himself. He prevented Krillin from getting to the finals and he defeated Goku in the final round. Though this plan is rather caring when you think about it, it's also kind of screwed up that he sought to teach his students the lesson of perseverance by beating them up. We left one important thing out of the match between Goku and him: the fact that he turned into a great ape in the middle of it.

After regrowing his tail during a previous match, the full moon once again transformed Goku into the ape monster. In order to stop Goku's rampage, and to continue the match, Master Roshi, as Jackie Chun, had to resort some drastic measures. Like Piccolo would later do for Gohan, Roshi destroyed the moon so that the Great Ape transformation would be reversed. He may not be able to use the Kamehameha, but he makes up for it with immense strength. The two never train together in any serious way, in fact, he refuses to help him train in Dragon Ball Super, but the two have spent so much time together throughout the series after Oolong moves into his island home.

Oolong must have at least learned some cleverness from Master Roshi as well as he is one of the few people to survive in the alternate future timeline that Trunks travels from after the Androids kill Goku. His rock paper scissors skills could use some work though considering his devastating loss against Beerus. Outside of Master Roshi, Krillin is likely the strongest human on planet Earth.

He learned much from his master during their time training together and even managed to be a solid rival to Goku during that era. He certainly learned more from the turtle hermit than he did at the Orin Temple where he was raised. He's died plenty of times against some of the most terrifying villains in the series but has also managed to use his cunning to win battles no one would expect.

Considering he beat Goku in a fair fight in Dragon Ball Super , it's impossible for anyone to deny his skills as a fighter. Skills he gained thanks to Master Roshi's training. Yamcha was able to learn a lot from his training with Master Roshi despite having far less time to do so than Goku and Krillin. He might only be a baseball player today, but those lightning-fast reflexes he uses in games were honed during his time with the turtle hermit.

It's a touching moment to realize that Grandpa Gohan helped deliver milk with Master Roshi when he was young just like Goku does as a child.

Seeing him hold his own during a match against Goku while wearing a mask shows just how strong of a martial artist he is.
