Saltwater crocodile attacks and sightings Saltwater crocodile attacks red circles and notable records captures or confirmed sightings. Source: CrocBITE Over the past decade, thanks to the efforts of CrocBITE and numerous local and regional crocodile specialists, the magnitude of human-saltwater crocodile conflict is becoming better understood.
To summarise, here are the current facts: There is no data showing conclusively that significant numbers of crocodiles have moved or are moving between the Northern Territory and Timor-Leste.
Attacks on humans by crocodiles have been increasing throughout the range of saltwater crocodiles, including in much of Indonesia, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. The increase seen in Timor-Leste is not unique, and it makes no logical sense to conclude that Australian crocodiles are the ones responsible.
The situation appears considerably more complex, as the efforts of numerous local and regional crocodile specialists are starting to show, and which are now being published.
These increases have nothing to do with any migration. There is no easy surface current on which crocodiles from Australia can move to Timor-Leste. The Indonesia Throughflow would take crocodiles west, away from Timor altogether. Subscribe to Weekly Newsletter :. Donate Now.
